Traditional vs Modern First Dance – Which will you choose?!

We met Enrica from First Dance Academy at a recent wedding fair in The Headfort Arms, Kells, Co.Meath. My instant reaction was If only I had met Enrica before my wedding!! When I look back on our first dance, I cringe! But you dont have to! Enrica will teach you your preferred dance style and have you dancing like a pro, full of confidence in front of your guests! Enrica is a wealth of knowledge in this area – Below is her guidance for your first dance, which style will you go for?!

Your first dance is a memorable moment that sets the tone for your reception. Choosing between a traditional or modern wedding dance style is an important decision that reflects your personality, preferences and the overall theme of your special day. In this blog, we will explore the characteristics of both traditional and modern wedding dances, helping you determine which style is the perfect fit for you and your partner. Whether you prefer timeless elegance or contemporary flair, understanding the differences between these dance styles will assist you in creating a magical dance experience that perfectly aligns with your vision.

Traditional First Dance

Traditional wedding dances have stood the test of time, steeped in history and cultural significance. These dances exude elegance, grace, and often carry sentimental value. Here’s a few popular traditional wedding dance styles:

Waltz: The Waltz is a classic and romantic dance characterized by its flowing movements and smooth rotations. It is known for its 3/4 time signature and gentle rise and fall motions. The Waltz is perfect for couples seeking a traditional, formal, and sophisticated dance experience.

Foxtrot: The Foxtrot is a smooth and elegant dance style that incorporates long, gliding steps. It is often performed to slow-tempo big band or jazz music. The Foxtrot’s sophisticated and refined movements make it a popular choice for couples who appreciate traditional ballroom dancing.

Tango: The Tango is a passionate and intense dance that showcases sharp, dramatic movements and intricate footwork. It embodies the connection between partners and creates a sense of drama and tension. Tango is ideal for couples who desire a passionate and captivating dance that exudes sensuality and strength.

Modern Wedding Dances

Modern wedding dances offer a contemporary twist, infusing the dance floor with energy, creativity, and personal expression. These styles often incorporate elements of popular dance genres and allow for more individuality and improvisation. Here are a few popular modern wedding dance styles:

Salsa: Salsa is a lively and energetic dance that originated in Latin America. It combines fast footwork, vibrant hip movements, and intricate partner work. Salsa embraces the joy and excitement of celebration, making it an ideal choice for couples who want to create a lively and festive atmosphere.

Swing: Swing dancing encompasses various styles such as Lindy Hop, East Coast Swing, and West Coast Swing. It features upbeat music, energetic movements, and playful spins and lifts. Swing dancing is perfect for couples who want to bring a sense of fun and nostalgia to their wedding dance.

Contemporary: Contemporary dance blends elements of classical ballet, jazz, and modern dance. It allows for artistic expression, combining fluid and dynamic movements with emotional storytelling. Contemporary dance is ideal for couples who seek a unique and emotionally charged dance performance that showcases their creativity and connection.

Choosing the Right Dance Style

To determine the right dance style for your wedding, consider the following factors:

Personal Preferences: Consider your personal taste and style. Do you prefer the elegance and grace of a traditional dance, or are you more drawn to the energy and individuality of a modern dance?

Wedding Theme: Think about the overall theme and atmosphere of your wedding. If you’re having a classic, formal affair, a traditional dance may complement the ambiance. For a more contemporary and relaxed wedding, a modern dance style may be a better fit.

Dance Experience: Assess your dance experience and comfort level. Traditional dances often require more structured technique, while modern dances may allow for more personal interpretation and improvisation. Choose a style that aligns with your abilities and the amount of time you’re willing to invest in dance lessons.

Song Selection: Consider the song you’ve chosen for your first dance. Some songs naturally lend themselves better to a traditional dance, while others may inspire a more modern and expressive performance.

Choosing between a traditional or modern wedding dance style is a deeply personal decision that depends on your preferences, wedding theme, dance experience, and song choice. Traditional dances offer elegance and grace, while modern dances bring energy and individuality to the dance floor. Ultimately, the right dance style is the one that resonates with you and your partner, creating a magical and memorable moment that reflects your unique love story. Whether you choose to waltz across the floor or sway to a contemporary beat, the most important thing is to embrace the joy of dancing together as you celebrate your special day.

Ireland AM with Sara Irish Wedding Blog

Enjoy the Rosa Clara on Ireland AM HERE.

So we are always excited when we team up with Sara from Irish Wedding Blog and showcasing a snippet of our beautiful wedding dresses on Ireland AM this Spring was no exception!

We carefully chose two of our gowns to have professionally modelled by the stunning Catwalk Model Agency. Sara chatted with Karen Koster and Alan Hughes – who appeared super excited, especially when they heard our rhyming names!

Unlike other bridal boutiques, our dresses are ‘off the rail’, so we stock only ONE of each gown. If you love these or any of our advertised gowns, book your private appointment to try before your favs are snapped up!

The second gown we chose to showcase is the jawdropping Rosa Clara Olaf.

We chose this gown as it really is a statement, featuring two looks in one wedding dress. Not only does this create a wow factor, it is an amazing cost saving for brides who desire two looks in one. The detachable over-skirt is a stunning mikado pleated fabric complete with bow feature to front and pockets. It sits comfortably over the fitted lace wedding dress and is simply removed to reveal your second evening bridal look! The slim fit lace gown is exquisite, featuring illusion sleeves, neckline and back draping to a scalloped lace hem and chapel train. Stunning!!

This 2-piece works beautifully as one and ensures you’ll be a bride to remember!

The first gown we chose is a stunning Mori Lee ballgown that features a subtle overall shimmer, ruched waist and pockets!

We chose this gown to show how flattering a strapless gown can be. Many of our brides are against strapless, however when the seamstress alters the gown it will fit you to perfection, no awkward pulling at the top when she is finished! If you do prefer the added support, the seamstress can easily add material from the hem (or train if you are super tall and need the full length) to create straps. We’re not sure about other seamstresses, but our recommended lady is so professional that nobody will even realise straps were added!
